2020 City of London Probationary Firefighter Applicants Update

First round hiring is now complete with 14 candidates selected and training has begun. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the City of London has decided to draw upon the candidate pool from the August 2020 recruitment so no additional testing will be required at this time. Candidates are currently being reviewed and applications assessed for an additional 14 probationary firefighter positions. Selected candidates will be contacted for the interview process within the next four (4) weeks. Candidates may be required to provide updated documents if necessary.

The next estimated start date will be February 2021 for hired candidates.

Exam Results

Dear City of London Probationary Firefighter Candidate:

On behalf of the corporation of the City of London and Fire Dept., we would like to extend our thanks for attending the 2020 Fall Probationary Firefighter pre-qualifying exams. On behalf of Chief Hamer, Deputy Chiefs Hayes & Hunt and the corporation, it was a pleasure to have met each of you and we wish you all success in the recruitment process.

You will find your unique and confidential candidate ID which will correspond with your exam scores here.

Along with your exam scores, next steps in the process will be: candidate application evaluation, and interviews.  While we thank all candidates for their interest in the City of London’s Fire dept., only those candidates that have been selected to move forward to the interview stage will be contacted with interviews beginning the week of August 31st continuing into the week of September 1st, 2020.

Mask Requirement
In accordance with the City of London by-law and the current Middlesex-London Health Unit mandate, ALL EXAM ATTENDEES MUST WEAR A MASK * while inside the building and while writing the examination

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, we ask that everyone entering a City facility take a short self-assessment.
Ask yourself…
1.     Do you have a fever, new or existing cough, or difficulty breathing?
2.     Have you travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days?
3.     Have you been in close contact with a confirmed or probable COVID-19 case?
4.     Have you had close contact with a person with acute respiratory illness who has been outside Canada in the last 14 days?
If you answer ‘no’ to all the questions, you have passed the screening and can continue.

Due to Covid-19 space planning restrictions currently in place, we are limited to seating capacity per exam session.  Although most candidates remain unaffected from the original schedule posted, there are some candidates whose exam session time has changed.

Your assigned exam date & time will coordinate with your surname (last name). 




10:00 AM – 12:15 PM 

A – CR  à Last names starting with the letters A-CR inclusive will be writing at this exam session



13:30 PM- 15:45 PM 

D – HART  à Last names starting with the letters D-HART inclusive will be writing at this exam session



16:45 PM-19:00 PM

Exams will be held at the YMCA-Center Branch, 382 Waterloo St., London, ON.



·        There is both surface and underground parking available onsite at the YMCA at 382 Waterloo St. London, ON. This parking is free of charge and is available on a first come first served basis;


·        Should the lot be full, there is free street parking available through the HONK app (you will need to set up an account with your credit card, however the City of London is currently waiving street parking fees, and your credit card will not be charged);


·        Additional Pay parking lot approximately 30 meters north of the YMCA at the corner of Dundas & Waterloo and;


·        Additional Pay parking lot approximately 200 meters south at the corner of York St. & Waterloo St.  


COVID & Exam Protocols

The Health & Safety of our candidates, FireHire representatives, YMCA staff, City and Fire Dept staff is important to us. As such, we have implemented the following protocols to protect everyone's Health & Safety. 

·        Due to Covid-19 safe assembly protocols, we are limited as to the number of candidates and support staff we can have in the exam hall per square foot and candidates will be seated per current guidelines.

·        As mask protocols continue to evolve, directives are currently being reviewed by the City of London. We will post mask requirements for entry into the building as well as when taking the exam as soon as the City of London has determined the requirement as set out by the Middlesex Health Unit & City Council. Information will be posted on this page as well as sent to you via email and text message.

·        Covid-19 self assessment questionnaires are also being reviewed by the City of London, and once confirmed, will be posted on this page as well as sent to you via text and email. You will need to fill it out prior to attending your exam

·        To minimize contact and exposure to one another, we would ask that all candidates enter off the north side sliding door of the YMCA where you will be greeted by a FireHire representative. Please follow the direction of the FireHire representatives once inside the building.

·        For our staff to properly disinfect between exam sessions, please do not arrive more than 45 minutes prior to your exam time as we need to facilitate disinfecting and cleaning between exam sessions.

·        Exam doors will close at 5 minutes before exam time.

·        No food or beverage will be allowed in the exam hall (please do not bring into the building).

·        To minimize contact for this exam session, we will allow cell phones to be brought into the exam hall, however they will need to be powered off and flipped upside down prior to exam start.

Application Closed- Exam Next Steps

 On behalf of the City of London and the City of London's Fire Department, we would like to thank all candidates who applied to the 2020 Fall Probationary Firefighter Recruitment. The application portal has now closed and we are entering the next phase of the recruitment- Exams. 


Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will be limiting the number of candidates writing the exam at one time. As such, we will be hosting multiple exam sessions over a two (2) day period. While we are still finalizing details for the exams session times, we will post your exam session time on this "Announcments" page, by days end Wednesday, July 22, 2020. We will also send out reminders by text, and email. Please be advised exam sessions will be held on:

  • Date: Thursday, August 6th, & Friday, August 7th 2020 
  • Location: YMCA-Center Branch, 382 Waterloo St.,London, ON 

A Covid-19 self-assessment will also be sent to you prior to the exam. Please monitor this page for continued updates.
